Just throwing it out there. There should be a forum similar to dive reports, but one where people don't chat. As in, it contains only dive reports (vis, tide, swell, location, etc) I'm sure it would be very useful for those that live a while from the beach to save them the drive (particularly visibility) The report shouldn't even include fish caught or pics, that could be a separate forum. I'd be happy to check the vis down my way and put it online. What do people think?
As the dive reports seem to be more about showing your catch and chatting, rather than people giving reports. I think it would get people out in the water more. Better to do it than talk about it.
It would also stop people from filling the report with stupid things like "show pics or it didn't happen".
As I'm sure most don't whack off to pics of peoples catches and don't take photo's of their own catch anyway.
I don't photograph my shits to show people, or my weekly shopping, why would i photograph my catch? We are there when we catch and eat our fish, why do we need a photo?

By the way, visibility down parkdale way today (friday 12th June) is shit maybe 2-3 metres max, with about 20 knots NNW and cold (my mates thermometer read 13.6 water temperature) Perfect for swimming to the bouy and following the chain down. I'm off!

Surely a new "Vis/Weather" thread would suffice, a whole forum wouldn't be necessary.

Sounds like a good idea to me, I'm only new to spear fishing and live a fair drive from the beach. a forum that will tell me where the vis and weather is good would be a great help.

hahaha, that has got to be OLAF's alias.

Mike, a forum would be sick, with sub headings with regions, since the report is different for the east and west coast, different areas of bays etc. I don't reakon one folder would do it, imagine a few reports a week for every area it would get filled pretty quick. I just thought it would be good to get people out in the water. It was just an idea. Someone wrote on one of the forums that they went for their first spear in over a month. I wouldn't even consider myself a spearfisherman if i only went that often.

JJS,

I will talk to Kurt and we can trial it.. It might almost be as successful as the line fishing section was!

JJS, maybe have a look at setting up your own site? Bubblies and spearo's would probably use it, get enough traffic and it could end up like swellnet with ads etc?

Dunno if you'll get enough reports on here as alot of the guys like myself prefer to post/read pics and stories. Can't hurt to try but you never know, could end up making some cash out of your own one?

Kurt, is it possible to have some kind of link or something that picks up when someone types in the words swell or vis and copies the sentence to another thread? Save these guys from reading all our "Boring" stories? 8)

OLAF- You lost me at IP addresses.
Johnson- You had me at hello.
Rhino- That could work. It's not for my use, but i thought it would benefit others who live a while from the beach. As much as i would love to read everyone's riveting stories I'd much rather be out their spearing. Although, i have read some and they are gold. How's that guy who saw the little bronzie and thought he was nearly a statistic. I also can't get enough of most of the shark talk on here. My mates and I love it!

For this to work you are going to need a shit load of people doing reports & even after still, it's not going to be reliable. The sheer unpredictability of the Victorian weather makes it hard to plan your dive. It's fine to read a report of someone saying "awesome vis 15M+ blah blah blah" so you jump in your car an hour later, drive 3 hours to the location and find it's turned into pea soup.
Your better paying attention to surf forecasts and wind directions, planning your dive at what ever location & if that fails, have a back up spot. The best way to know if locations are going to be divable comes from having really good knowledge of your dive spots & where to go if it's no good there. It can't hurt to have contacts along the coast to tell you if it's worth it, but unless they diving with a mobile phone and & can call you to come jump in a spot X, it's still not going to be reliable.
Sometimes you just gotta learn the hard way & be prepared to travel.

I don't see the point of this, you might as well just attach a report of the weather to each report you do in the dive reports section. Then you don't have to read any stories if you do not wish. Personally i hate being forced to read those bloody dive report stories.

tvolke- Everyone should use swell, wind, tide and rain reports before going for a dive, you would be stupid not to. I think your missing my point.

No I got your point very well.

It's just the fact that conditions change to fast for it to be useful & your really going to need a lot of people reporting conditions for it to be of any use.

I spose a bad report might save someone driving to a dive location an hour after it's made, but it ain't gonna be useful for the next day. The more you understand how the weather affects the water it's going to save you jumping in and finding out it was a waste of time.

For instance you said

And I wouldn't of even wasted my time looking at parkdale with a 20 knot nnw.

tvolke- I knew the visibility wouldn't be good hence why i went to parkdale beach as it's my closest beach with bouys to swim up and down the chain. I don't consider getting in the water ever a waste of time. I guess it's how you look at it. Better to get wet than not. There's heaps more to do in the water when it's no good for spearing. Try not to see it as time wasted.

For me this site is my most used, because my number one hobbie is freediving/spearfishing.
Im sure i use all the mian sites as all the other speros out there before deciding where to get in and i think they will hard to beat.
What i hate about this site is that a hand full of people get on these forums and ignorantly bitch about other speros. Nothing tells me more (without getting wet) than other speros dive storys and pics. i dont whack off to other peoples pics, because i know why there up there, its called pride. sometimes our efforts and skills pay off so we take a pic of our pride. pics are no different to telling the story besides the fact a pic tells alot more,

jjs your more than happy to tell storys of big duskys that eskape, big fish that look like mulloway and all thse whiting that you caught with your sling youv gathered in your less than 12 months of spearfishing. Whats the difference from story and a pic?
Apart from the obvious.
