Bottom 5 make great burly, the moon lighter I don't know of anyone
That spears them, the top fish long nose borefish, catch limit is 1, but one of the best fishes the bay has to offer.

Hey John,

Well done on the catch but remember to know what your shooting before you shoot the fish and only take what you need.
Below is a good place to learn about Victorian fish species
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=917

The moonlighter also known as a Six Banded Coral Fish. I've never eaten one and probably too scared too  as I don't know any spearos or lino's(rod and reel fishermen) that have eaten them which probably means something.
Mind you they do have the same fish in Western Australia and if you do a google search (moonlighter fish eating) on the fish wrecked forum some people rate them.

At the end of the day "most" fish if eaten the same day taste pretty good including the long finned pike and the red mullet (goatfish) which you have.

If you eat the moonlighter let us know you go.

Geoff

Hi Bluegroper, thanks for the advice, actually I know every fish that I spear, at least I know that they are not forbidden...
The only one that I don't really know is the moonlighter but I would give it a try and I will let you know about the taste of this fish. I came to Black Rock today and I focused on the Pinkies. It was very funny but a lot of them are very small, I had to select the bigger and 2 of my catch were just above the limit size of 28cm.

Hey John,

Good that you know most of your fish saw one of your posts a while back and thought that you may be from France and therefore not know a lot about Vic species. Great catch today I was down at the carpark and probably saw you out there around 2:30-3:00pm. Saw 2 floats with 3 divers I think? What was the vis like?

Geoff

Hi Bluegroper,
Yeh am French (sorry about that ;-)) but I have been in australia for 7 month 4 years ago and I follow this forum from a bite of time now.
Well arrived at Black rock around 2:30 and I saw also 2 floats but it was not me. I was by myself (unfortunatly). The vis was correct but no more than 3-4 metres.
See you soon buddy

If ever you see a big moonlighter, nail it. I've managed to pick up what for moonlighters are absolute monsters a couple of times and they are very good eating.

Hey john, I was spearing out of Black rock on the Tuesday so probably saw my orange float (managed a few good sized flathead myself and there),

The top photo and bottom photos you posted show some good sized Red Mullet (goatfish) and I wouldn't be using them for berly! Great tasting flesh, my folks love eating those when i find any ones on size which isn't often...nice boary too!
