Hi All,

See below for information Geoff put together regarding the comp planned for this coming weekend.

It's with great excitement that I would like to announce our 1st comp of the 17/18 season, a pairs shore dive comp. This time last year we had the highest numbers for the year attend this comp and what better timing right now, considering the amount of squid, salmon and snapper reports coming through.

This comp is aimed at those that are wanting to see how our comps run and possibly learn from an experienced diver. (Although not compulsory we encourage our existing members to pair up with a newbie) Anybody without a dive buddy will be paired up on the day. All welcome regardless of experience.

***IMPORTANT COMPETITION INFORMATION***
We will confirm an exact day and location on Thursday evening. (Possibly Phillip island or Mornington Peninsula) The day will be held on Saturday 23d or Sunday 24th depending on conditions. We will meet at 8am for a 9am start. Entries will not be excepted after 8.30am.
All competitors must have at least AUF membership, a valid fishing license and a Southern Freedivers competition entry form filled out and Entry fee ($15 per senior competitor and junior competitors there is a $5 fee)

You can download the SFD competition form from the following link ( DO NOT TURN UP WITHOUT IT )

So we arrived at YCW and there was still a bit of punch in the swell. Lulls between sets made conditions deceivable, but we decided to act on the cautious side and move to pyramid to get a bit more protection from the 4 ft wsw swell.
We arrived to flat clear conditions on the left side of pyramid. With a slighty later start we began at 9:20 with the goal of finishing at 2pm. We had 4 pairs compete with a mixture of some experienced divers with juniors and beginners. We had 2 father and son pairs and it was great to see a couple of new members Mark and Richie pair up with some Sfd members and do their first official comp.
We started from the car park and half the group went right and the other group left. Water was 11.5 degrees and clarity was reasonably good some areas up to 10m and the worst areas were still reasonable with up to 5m of Vis. However fish life was challenging especially when trying to find larger weighable models.
With the comp being more of a beginners comp and also non aggregate I was flexible on rules especially with those that arrived back after 2pm or most that didn't sign off and some that didn't stay within 30m of their buddy.
It was still a fun day had by all and the competition ended up being hotly contested with many having species that just didn't make weight. Special thank you to Murray and Watto for lending their support by coming down at the end and helping out by cooking the snags and doing the scoring.

Here are the final results:
Brendan Waller and Mark Wang - 4 Species 453.70pts Congratulations
Paul and Marcus Dorfstatter (junior) - 4 Species 427.10
Geoff Gannon & Richie Surjan - 3 Species 318.60
Tim & Cameron Fitzpatrick (junior) - 1 species 104.95

Memorable catches
Mark 350g Red Mullet
Geoff 785g Magpie Perch
Marcus 930g Zebra

Thanks again for those that turned up and I'm sure as the weather warms up the fish will be come more prolific along with the spearos that chase them.
