No kit. Haven't picked up woodworking tools in anger for years; slowly relearning my old mistakes

kiwi_scott: Phwooaaarr!!! That thing's looks 'ooooge!!!

'Looks almost big enough to climb into, plant your bum over the mib-rib and paddle back to shore should the need call for it. And in fact, you could probably turn your speargun and one of your flippers into a serviceable oar to do it with (i.e. shove the barrel through the footpocket and out the toehole, with the muzzle end extending down the flipper blade to give it a little extra reinforcement, with the lower hand, grasp the heel of the flipper and barrel to prevent any slipping or twisting, upper hand on the speargun handle, and away you go!).

What are the dimensions on it (e.g. length, beam, depth/draught etc)?

Mind you; you could probably stash some good size kingies in it, which is just what you want going by Rhino's recently loss of one off his float to a seal.

Andrewv: Cheers for the link to the "Plat's". The comments in there echoed some of the thoughts that had been rattling round my mind when mulling over the design of these floats.

What's holding you up with finishing off the front-half-of-a-kayak? Is there not enough room left inside once you put a bit of buoyancy (i.e. the polystyrene foam) in there?

Cheers all!

It's on the big side, roughly the same size as the popular 'Packhorse' plastic float (but with the obvious difference in hull shape). Measured along the top its 1100 x 600 mm from memory, and 240 mm high. Kiwi 'plats' come bigger and smaller, personal preference for the most part. I thought about making it a little smaller, but I was aiming to be able to squeeze my fins inside on a rockhop. I'd also rather big and stable than small and sunk, but we'll see how it tows soon enough.
Apparently the main problem with kayak noses is stability, but you see a few around so they can't be too bad. I've seen photos of one with external pontoons, which could be one way to fix the roll.

I really just wanted to think about a plan of attack .
Start from scratch with a foam mold , glass over it then split it, remove the foam and fit the stuff I want inside .The advantage of this is that I can make it any shape or size I like but its a lot of work.
Or
Modify the bow of the kayak front , Fit the stuff inside , modify the top then fill the rear.

I think I have decided on 2 compartments,2 hatches (small one in the bow for my stuff). I would like to fit a channel along the top so I can fit my gun, ( maybe 2). Fins must fit on or in it. Back pac straps .
At this stage modify the kayak is the go. ( I have a shed full of white foam balls)

Rather than split it, leave a gap in the glass where the door is going to be, cut the door out then dissolve the foam away in petrol? No seams that way

After a couple of weeks with no access I have borrowed my daughters laptop.
I filled the bow with poring foam then shaped it. Its now been covered with glass and the foam removed. I gave up with the styrene foam as it tended to fall apart in the shaping process. (poring foam sticks like shit to everything)

Well I am learning about glass and all is going well. I now have the rear hatch made up ( I used a baking tin outside as a mold).I have also created a flat area and fitted the rim for the lid to fit over.(baking tin inside as mold). The front compartment wall has been fitted and the hole for the front hatch cut.I still have to make a rear bulkhead ( with 2 tubes for spare prangers and torch). And reinforce some points for attachments.
