Looks like my plans have come good! :P

Heading to Hobart on the 23rd a few days later making my way up with to the Bay of Fires (North East) for some camping, all along the way trying to collect my 10 crays - thats correct, 10, to bring back with me. Just hoping that I get some decent weather.

I have also had reports that the north-east is rife with King Fish, and even Tuna (although I am uncertain about the credibility of the Tuna report).

Anyone got any tips on how to bring back fish/crays? I asked someone about it once and they said there was a way to get them delivered in a cool-box
that was worthwhile monetarily.

I would rather do this than go on "Tom's Crocodile Spearfishing Safari"

Don't quote me Jizzbox but there may be a regulation on possession of crayfish that are not commercially taken. I seem to remember someone telling me that if you have more than 2 or 4 or something in your posession you can get in shit. Just letting you know.

Thanks for your concerns Tom :

You pay $40 on top a regular fishing license and that permits you to collect 15 (thats correct, its not a typo, they just increased it) lobsters over 14 days in Tassie. Am hoping to get close
to that amount and probably bring back half tails half whole. I have 10 days.

For anyone interested : http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/We ... dsalicence?

There is really plenty in the waters, you can get them ANYWHERE and the strong impression I get is that it is not intensely popular for people to take them free-diving as it is here.

No I mean a posession limit for Victoria Jazz. Not for tasmania. I think there may be a posession limit in Victoria, so technically you could not prove the crays were not taken in Victoria and therefore you would be over the limit.

I don't think that would be much of a probelm. Technically I would have procured them outside of state so its not their business. They only worry about taking AND subsequent possession here. If I bought ten crays at the market and didn't get a reciept I would be in biiiiiig trouble?

How do you plan on storing them whilst your camping?
If you saw ten big crays on the first dive you'll be carrying them around for ten days on ice?

Rich.

Hey Rich,

Yeah, been thinking about that. I don't think they would last 10 days, but I am fairly certain that replacing ice daily in a good esky should keep em just fine for about 3-4 days at a time.

Its not so much that I want to actually bring them back, but rather enjoy eating crays ona regular basis while on a pleasant camping trip. This is the real joy of the trip. If I can manage to bring a few, I hope its over 4. That would really be nice. :P

I think on my last 3-4 days I'll go more local on a couple of trips and I can simply store them in my mates freezer. I know they are plentiful so the number could be higher rather than lower.

I am fairly certain that what I bring back with me from one state to another is my buisness (except fruit and standard contraband).

What gave you that impression?

I bring back Frozen Trout every year from Burnie with REX in sealed broccoli box's we get from the grocers. We wrap them in frozen tecni ice packs and news paper to take up any gaps. The boxes are weighed at the airport and we also photograph the contents prior to sealing. This is more than enough evidence if challenged by the fisho's.
You can bring back almost any food substance from Tas but nothing from here to Tas. Any ice has to be sealed and leak proof and you cant use dryice as it gives off CO2.
If your traveling on the boat you could use dryice to keep your catch frozen for days but don't let the dry ice directly touch your catch or it will burn it. Dryice can be purchased in pallet or block form from most BOC gas & gear depots but you may have to order it a few days prior to pick up.

Just got more of a heads up for this trip: there are plenty bays in Tassie which do not get ocean swell but still have all the decent fish species as well as crays.

Cannot wait.
