Oh god...
Have a cry
That catch doesn't all belong to the three people pictured, and just out of interest. Yes we are all amateurs!
Don't actually know of many pro spearfishers..
I've actually only been spearing for nine months. Does make any difference?
Also whats wrong with trevally, bastard trumps, goatfish, boars or sweep?
As far as the others go lots of people love leathers and I know I love bluethroat fishcakes.
Never tried snook so can't comment on that one, but basically just because you don't like it or think it's too easy to shoot doesn't mean others think the same way.
I know that all of my catch from that day was consumed in a few hours at my birthday BBQ.
(sorry if that disappoints you Octopussy)
Let me get this straight... If you are heading out to collect a feed and don't see any "Prestigious" fish but see plenty of tasty fish like a boring old sweep you should go home empty handed?
I personally took what I needed for one meal (yes a rather big B'day meal) and I won't be taking a bag that size again until my birthday next year.
I do believe there are some fish that aren't worth shooting like rays or duskies but at the same time that's just my OPINION. There are cultures that love eating ray flaps and probably even people who like duskies!
Spearfishing is sport that involves both hunting and eating...
Sometimes the eating qualities outweigh the fact that they are easy to get. Abs for example.
Nobody ever has a go at people for collecting abs. They are a piece of piss to collect so there's no real skill involved but they taste good so nobody whinges.
On the other hand HEAPS of fish are shot purely for sport and completely wasted in the name of a trophy photo.
Nobody ever has a go at the blokes who go and shoot fish up north and then chop them up as berly because they are too risky to eat due to ciguatera (Spelling)
"Wow look at this beautiful coral trout it's massive, I killed it and turned it in to berly!"
How is that cool?
Now you've got me going how about spearing in competitions?
I have nothing against the people involved, even though I disagree with the whole concept!
The whole idea is to go out and shoot as many and as large a fish as you can off the list...
Hmmm... Do I actually like this fish I'm about to shoot or am I just going to shoot it so I can get more points.
The primary goal of killing fish in a competition is for points. NOT consumption.
Yes they will all be eaten afterwards but once again there will be many fish killed purely for the sake of sport/points.
Now I know why the dive reports fill up with crap!
If anyone would like to add further comments why not start another thread in the appropriate section discussing the issue.
