" Anglers nabbed for big catches of Wrasse and Snapper
30 October 2009

Four Melbourne men are facing heavy fines after allegedly being caught with 76 wrasse at Rhyll, on Phillip Island, after an anonymous call to the 24-hour offence-reporting line 13-FISH.

At the same time, a 57-year old Narre Warren man was caught with four times the legal limit of snapper during a routine patrol at Patterson Lakes. "

They had their gear confiscated too.
Not sure if that included boats or cars but it's good to see Fisheries actually responding to some of these calls.

I know Brighton was getting hammered with many people keeping two or three times the legal bag over a period of four or five days.
I know at least four calls were made to 13fish (probably more) with no apparent response...

I know they are busy and probably under staffed but when numerous calls are made about the same place on consecutive days, surely it's worth heading down for a look?

Mind you I have only ever seen fisheries at places that are easy to walk from the car, like the warmies and piers. Never seen them do the hard yards and walk right out to the ends of breakwalls, like Brighton, Sandy or St kilda...

Rich.

The response fisheries gave when this issue was raised at the recent fisheries forums is that 13FISH is not a response unit. It is designed to raise the alarm of where and when such offences are occuring and they use this information to catch offenders.

Yes i know, sounds a bit stupid considering the offenders have been observed doing the crime. BUT it is not what the number is designed for..
