There are huge Cowanyoung ( 0.8 - 1.1kg ) b/w Cowes and Lysaghts at present - keep an eye out near the entrances ; note the Vic record is 0.62kg , speared 11 years ago.

To bad it doesn't encourage spelling.

They also get called horse mackerel and scad. I've only ever got a couple of them but they are bloody tasty hot smoked.

im not sure if these are the same as the ones in northern NZ, but the jack mackerel in NZ are a yellow/green sorta colour and with the silvery/white bottom and yellow fins and tails. the colouring is very similar to Kingfish.
if it is the same fish, well i wish you luck getting close to them :P they are pretty skitty. ive only ever caught them on line. shame they dont grow very big coz for their size they have very tenacious fighting abilities.
when looking at pics of the cowanyoung it didnt show the colour very well and also i couldnt see the distictive black dot the the jack makerel have in NZ.
oh and again if they are the same fish, im pretty sure they are shit eating from memory, lots of bones and just generally not that nice....Kingfish love them tho ;)

Far out. Why don't you just call the fish by its common local name and stop being Dr. Crypto?

Probably because anyone (95% fishermen) around Melbourne calls them cowanyoung (common local name) ie not a cryptic name.
Funny thing fish names , warehou/snotty-nosed trevally are called haddock in Portland 8) , and you know yourself that elsewhere there are other strange name occurrences .

** and yahoo - someone slightly impressed by the "samba impersonator" !
cheers jazzman,
greg.
