Huge Cray

One of my friends sent me this in an E-mail, It was caught down in Tassie

This cray picture is a myth!
I have heard its from N.Z ,West Coast Vicco and now Tazzie.

can anyone shed some truth on this monster?

I've seen that pic before, I have a feeling it came from King Island (which is technically Tasmania) quite some time ago (4 years or so?). I don't think it was a rec capture, the scuba tank is for 'decoration' only.

Look at the size of the checkers on the deck and the size of the valve on that tank. That other cray is tiny.

A standard ally SCUBA tank is around 55cm I would estimate the 'small' cray a total length of somewhere 30-35cm total length (which would be 10cm and a bit carapace length)...

I'm pretty sure it's just a pony bottle.

It has to be trick photography, look at how big the grids are on the aluminium checker plate (there not that large normally).

No tricks, its just a reasonable Cray on a pony bottle. You don't even need to look a the pony bottle, look at the proportion of carapace to tail, this is an good but average Cray.

This picture is in the June Trailerboat magazine.

They have stated that the info they got with the photo said "it is an 8+kg Cray and is sitting on a full size dive tank" "and the cray next to it is legal size"

Then goes onto say they had a Marine Biologist have a look at the picture and he has stated "the photo does seem to be legitimate"

It is Also saying that they can grow up to 10kg and an 8kg is more than plausible. . . . . . .

As P Diddy says its a reasonable cray... taking the valve size into account I would conservatively say carapace length is approximately 18cm which does not equate to 8kg. Its trick photography on a pony. When you've seen 4kg+ crays then you would see that this may be around 3.5kg just due to structure of carapace. A 4kg+ cray has a carapase that looks like its on roids with clearly defined bulges for the centre and both cheeks.

A marine biologist is not a photography expert, if he had the specimen or a part of the specimen then he could provide near to true records, with a photo he has no credibility.

A nice cray and a nice try, but I wouldn't be owning up to that picture because the small cray is lucky to be legal???

definatly a pony bottle,still a nice cray. Recon 4 to 5 kilo

Thats a monster cray, even with him holding it in front of his body, when you look at the size of his fingers to the antennas its huge!
