Got in at Mount Martha today with my brother from about 2-4pm. Was great vis in close about 7-8 metres but we tried to get out to the reef but the viz got pretty bad and wasn't worth it so we ducked over to the rocks on the side and spent a bit of time there.

Ended up with 2 leather jackets and a garfish between us. Heaps of gars hanging and a few banded morwongs amongst other little things. Was great viz again at the rocks.

Yeh they look different to that. More long and have brown stripes. Google images them

(edit) just saw your post. It definitely wasn't that fish. I have shot one before and checked it in my sea fishes book and it looks like the banded morwong

No, not like that. You guys are probably right but after my first time down there a few weeks ago I saw one and looked in my book and that what I thought it was. I am probably wrong and I will look in my book again tonight.

anyone know what it is- was between two rocks, thought of shooting it

if you don't know what it is don't shoot it
I've done that mistake when first starting in Victorian waters and IH very eloquently let me know all about it.
have a good look at the fish and identify it once at home ... it's a good way to start and develop a healthy way of practicing / enjoying the sport rather than just shooting like a cowboy

The only reason i had shot one before was pure dumb luck. I was aiming at something else which i missed and my spear shot into some weed and then started wobbling about which turned out to be the fish in question. I checked it in the sea fishes book when i got home that time and it looked like the morwong to me but as i said i was probably wrong. When i saw them yesterday i never shot at one. And no i don't shoot like a cowboy, i only shoot at what i know and what i know the limits on.

I will try take some footage of one if i see one again next time so you guys can see if you know what it is.

More the problem with shooting a fish you dont know what it is, is the fact it is probaly not size hence fisheries could get very upset about it.
