any news on the progress of the portland fad?? it would be great to see it up and running by next tuna season 8) any idea on how many kms out the 100m line is? spearing tuna in our backyard....just imagine... :P

They will be up and running by December or January! Will get start in the next month or so.

Heres the brief summary of the project

The 'Trial of fish aggregation devices (FADS) in Victorian waters' project will construct and deploy 2 fish aggregation devices (FAD’s) in Victorian coastal waters. The catch and effort will be monitored through logbook records and under water visual census. The applicant will follow the same design and methods of deployment as in NSW. They will be working with recreational fishers to choose appropriate and best locations for the placement.

The spot we put in the application is about 16km from the boat ramp, but we need more info on bottom types etc...
There will be another one, probably off Barwon Heads, but not as far out. Sorry we couldn't organise anything over your side this year, we were abit rushed at the end and did what we could.
If these work, there will be more!

They attract pelagics like dolphinfish and tuna.
NSW has heaps of them. Checkem out here

i agree, fad work very well in nsw and have had a few of these fish caught in vic over the last few years.
i didn't know a cobia was caught in western port, does anyone know where about this was taken?
