Multi agency response to suspected algae bloom in Port Phillip Bay

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) is co-ordinating the response to a suspected marine algal bloom in Port Phillip Bay on behalf of the Victorian Government.

DSE is co-ordinating the actions of a number of Victorian Government agencies responding to this issue.

A helicopter has been deployed and ground crew have been sent out this morning to re-locate the substance and determine what it is.

The helicopter has identified several sites from Daveys Bay to McCrae with brown discoloured water and staff will be taking samples as soon as possible.

It is not believed to be an oil spill. The community is being warned to avoid contact where suspected algae blooms are evident.
Anyone who observes this substance should avoid contact with it.
Algal blooms can be common in Summer and are naturally occurring.

Water affected by a bloom can be discoloured and have an unpleasant odour and skin irritations can occur.

People should be wary of water that looks murky or sludgy.

If you accidentally come into contact with the substance thorough washing is advised.

The public are encouraged to report any sightings to the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842.
